AURORA, Colo. (AP) - Firefighters say a blaze at a three-story apartment building in Aurora has killed one woman who fell from a second-floor staircase balcony, and a dozen others were taken to hospitals with injuries including broken legs and sprains.
Aurora Fire Department Capt. Allen Robnett says it's unclear how the woman fell.
When crews arrived at the scene around 6 a.m. Saturday, an escape staircase was in flames. Firefighters rescued about 10 people using ladders from the ground.
Robnett says three police officers who helped with the rescues were treated at hospitals for neck, back and ankle injuries and released.
Of residents taken to hospitals, Robnett says one was critically injured. He says the injured included children, but he didn't know how many.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
