Fire mitigation west of Boulder under review

Fire management officials say removing trees and clearing brush and other fire mitigation worked by some measures, even though the Labor Day fire west of here was the most destructive in Colorado history in terms of homes lost.

There were no reported serious injuries or deaths from the 3,500 people who were evacuated or firefighters battling the blaze. The fire destroyed 166 homes. But figures compiled by fire managers found that there were 500 homes within the nearly 10 square miles that burned that survived.

Colorado Demomcratic Sen. Mark Udall, a resident of Boulder County and a long time supporter of mitigation efforts, has called for a review into whether mitigation efforts proved effective.
