Fire stops train; schools stay safe

MONUMENT - Lower winds are helping firefighters gain control of a wildland fire that burned just west of I-25 in northeastern El Paso County.

The fire began in barn near Old Denver Road and Baptist Road just after 10:00 a.m. and reportedly spread into the trees.  The barn is destroyed.

A BSNF train, stopped near the scene during the firefight, is on its way again.

Robin Adair, spokesperson for Lewis Palmer School District 38, says parents have been notified and that none of their schools are affected. The district is in contact with the fire department and does not expect class to be disrupted so long as the fire stays west of Old Denver Road.
