Friday evening's rescue of a hiker who fell at Garden of the Gods and got stuck is a reminder to anyone tempted to climb the steep red rocks.
The 32-year-old man wasn't climbing high enough to require the technical gear and permit. In Colorado Springs, you can get a free permit at the Garden of the Gods Visitors Center for technical climbing. The annual permit is free, and you can climb at Garden of the Gods, Ute Valley Park, Red Rock Canyon Open Space, and Cheyenne Canyon.
Scrambling (climbing without gear higher than 10 feet from the base of the rock) is prohibited.
If you have to be rescued and you are climbing above that 10-foot mark, you face a $500 fine.
