Fireworks on the fifth in Woodland Park

The Fourth of July fireworks in Woodland Park came from storm clouds: lightning, rain, and golf ball-sized hail.  That storm meant the man-made fireworks had to be cancelled Sunday night.

Woodland Park typically plans for two nights of fireworks:  both on the fourth and the fifth of July.  The pyrotechnicians setting up for both shows say Sunday night's show was a 12-hour setup.  Monday nights, a four-hour setup.  Sunday night's fireworks sit in the back of a trailer, waiting for a reschedule.

"You have to do it.  You have to set up, but a little rain must fall every now and then," says Ed Pelles, pyrotechnician for the shows. "That's Colorado, and I love it."

A large crowd gathered at Woodland Park Middle School for Monday night's festivities. The Colorado Springs Philharmonic provided music throughout the evening.  At dark, the music along with cannon volleys from Fort Carson will be timed with the fireworks.

Check with the City of Woodland Park to find out if the Fourth of July fireworks show will be rescheduled.
