Five explosives found Monday in Colorado Springs kept bomb crews busy.
Catherine McDonnell's mailbox took the brunt of one of four explosives Colorado Springs police found along Oro Blanco Drive Monday morning.
"After daybreak, I usually come out and get the mail, and the mailbox was on the ground. That was probably about 8 o'clock," says McDonnell.
Only two of those four went off.
"I started to pick it (the mailbox) up and police told me not to touch it, that there might be acid on it." McDonnell says.
Police are calling them chemical bottle bombs; a maintenance man found them.
McDonnell thinks the one in her mailbox might have gone off late Sunday night or maybe early Monday morning.
21-year-old Tyler Frasier and 24-year-old Caleb Long have been arrested for those four explosives and charged with felonies; possession of an explosive device. They're also facing misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief. Police say the two confessed to building the explosives.
Then, just before noon, there was another situation; this one was on E. Navajo St., near S. Nevada Ave.
"It looked like a pipe bomb," Colorado Springs Police Department Spokesperson Barbara Miller told News 5 that's what crews were seeing when they arrived.
Police say the device had a fuse. Somebody called it in. Police brought out the bomb squad, a K-9 unit, and finally used a robot to detonate the explosive.
"Fire in the hole!" one of the emergency workers yelled just before there was an explosion with white smoke coming up.
Police say the bomb failed, but looks like it could have done a lot of damage.
"They (bomb crews) believe it could have rocked the street here, so anybody who's nearby would have felt that," explains Miller. "The truck (right next to the bomb) probably would have been disintegrated."
Miller says CSPD doesn't believe at this time that the two scenes are related. Police are still looking for a suspect from the scene at E. Navajo St.
If you see anything suspicious, police urge you not to touch it; they say call them immediately.
