The El Paso County Health Department says all indications show the spread of influenza is underway. Locally six people have been hospitalized, and more and more lab tests are coming back with positive results for the illness.
Dr. Bernadette Albanese, the health department's medical director, says it's going to get worse before it gets better.
"We don't know when the activity will peak but we know that it typically doesn't peak in early January, it's just too soon," Albanese said. "So, we can expect more and more people to be suffering from flu illness really, probably for the next several weeks."
There's still time to get a flu shot. The vaccines are recommended for everyone age 6 months and up. Dr. Albanese also encourages parents and children to wash their hands frequently.
