Former military commander warns against climate-security link

The retired Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet is urging President Barack Obama to appoint an independent panel of experts to evaluate climate change before linking it to national security.

Adm. James A. Lyons, Jr., USN (Ret.), released an open letter to President Barack Obama that reads, in part, "Before we adopt policies that affect military-preparedness and national security, it is imperative that we act on honest assessments of the best available information."

Adm. Lyons cited an ongoing scandal involving senior United Nations scientists over tainted science slanted to favor global warming theories.

The president is expected to link global warming, renamed climate change, to national security in his State of the Union address.

Adm. Lyons is now Chairman of the Center for Security Policy's Military Committee.
