Fort Carson officials they're considering some changes for their Southern Colorado training site -- the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site.
They're thinking about a name change; eventually possibly calling it Fort Carson South.
Mountain Post officials want to make the connection between Fort Carson and the training site clear. The Garrison Commander, Col. Robert McLaughlin, says the site is vital to training soldiers for their mission.
Some have been concerned that the changes mean expansion of the site; what ranchers in the area have dreaded. However, Col. McLaughlin says there's no plans for that.
"Our mission here is to use the existing terrain to the best of our capability; and to communicate when we're training, how we're training, how that impacts the community, and how it makes our soldiers more combat ready," says Col. McLaughlin.
Col. McLaughlin says study the idea further, and talk to locals about their feelings on the name change. They don't have a timeline for getting it done.
