FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - The Fort Collins City Council has taken the first step toward a ballot question about a ban on oil and gas fracking. Under action taken Tuesday, the April ballot question will be on council's agenda for action next month.
Last month the council adopted a moratorium through the end of July on new oil and gas development inside the city and on other city-owned lands. It does not prohibit hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, on existing wells to free gas and oil trapped underground.
According to the Fort Collins Coloradoan (http://tinyurl.com/awkjknf), people opposed to the oil and gas extraction technique flooded public comment sessions at city council meetings in recent weeks demanding a ballot referendum in the April 2 municipal election asking for a permanent ban.
