Fort Lewis College officials have proposed layoffs and in-state tuition hikes at the Durango college to help cut $4.5 million over roughly the next two years to deal with a rollback in state funding.

The proposal includes seven layoffs and a 9 percent tuition increase for in-state students to about $2,800 per year. State legislators prohibited the school from raising out-of-state tuition, now at $16,000.

The cap limits how much the state would have to reimburse Fort Lewis for its practice of not charging Native American students tuition. College trustees have yet to approve the proposal.

The Legislature's decision to roll back higher-education funding to 2005-06 levels reverses a large increase the college received in its base funding in 2006-07.
