Four prisoners escape from Otero County Jail

Update: Police say La Junta Schools are on a "modified lockdown" today while the search continues for the escaped inmates. 

OTERO COUNTY- Police say four inmates from the Otero County Jail escaped last night after rushing a detention officer, and opening a cell.

The escapees are Angel Castrejon, Curtis Apodaca, Johnny Nunez, and Malcom Hoffert.

The men left the facility and fled across Highway 50 and into the rail yards in La Junta. Pieces of clothing were found in the rails yards last night. 

Assisting in search for the fugitives are Otero County Sheriff's Office, La Junta Police Department, CDOC (Colorado Department of Corrections), Rocky Ford Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, and Colorado Adult Parole, and the Bent County Sheriff's Office.

Governor Hickenlooper also authorized the Colorado National Guard to aid in the search.

The governor released the following official statement:

"The governor tonight authorized the Colorado National Guard to fly and use flares to assist with the search for inmates who escaped in Otero County. The Guard, the Colorado Department of Corrections and the Colorado Department of Public Safety are all assisting with the search. Any more details about the escape needs to come from the Otero County Sheriff's Office."
