Free Comic Book Day Comes to Colorado Springs

The first Saturday of May each year is Free Comic Book Day, a worldwide event where comic book publishers, distributors and retailers to promote reading and give away free comics.

Hundereds of people visited local comic shops throughout the area including Escape Velocity Comics in downtown Colorado Springs. People lined up around the block to as the shop prepared to open Saturday morning so that they could get their hands on some of the dozens of titles available for free.

Avid comic reader Jason Scyoc says reading comic books is a great way to bond with his 4 year old son, Corey.

"It really brings us together and allows my generation and his generation to communicate on a really different level. The graphic novel medium is something that transcends age and it's really great to be able to get him involved in something that I've been involved in for so long."

Doug Scott, owner of Escape Velocity Comics says even though he's giving away hundreds of comcs for free, the day still has a huge impact on business.

"Free Comic Book Day is always our biggest sales day of the year, even bigger than Christmas, so it really is kind of our Christmas day."
