Free pneumonia shots available for smokers

Pneumonia vaccine is available at no cost for smokers and those with asthma at the Pueblo City-County Health Department.

"In October of 2008, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended that all smokers as well as individuals with asthma, ages 19-64, be vaccinated with the pneumonia vaccine," stated Dr. Christine Nevin-Woods, public health director at the Pueblo City County Health Department.

This grant funded program originally allowed only smokers to be vaccinated. At this time, the scope of those who may receive the vaccine without charge at the Health Department has been expanded to include all individuals who smoke or who have been diagnosed with asthma and are in the 19-64 year old age group.

"The focus is to reach individuals who have no insurance; it is also available to those who can not afford a co pay or who are unable to obtain the vaccine from their primary care provider. Individuals who fall within the recommended guidelines to receive the Pneumonia vaccine only need it once before the age of 64 and then once more after 65 years of age," explained Dr Nevin-Woods.
