Free surgeries given today at Pueblo Surgery Center

Imagine needing surgery but not having insurance or enough spare money to make it happen.

For the fifth year, eleven doctors donated their time and skills to help out those in need with free surgeries.

Some of these surgeries normally cost thousands of dollars.

Around 30 surgeries took place today at the Pueblo Surgery Center, and all of those who benefited had a major need but no way to pay.

Many of the volunteers usually take their own time and money to go on mission trips outside of the U.S. to help those in need.

They say it's awesome to keep their skills inside the country and help out people who need it right here in Southern Colorado.

"They truly appreciate the possibility of getting care, so whether it's gallbladder problems or hernia problems, whatever surgery is being done, the patients are extremely grateful," said Dr. Paul Radway, a General Surgeon.

Plus, today's free surgeries also gave students at Colorado Technical University a chance to learn first hand about several different types of surgeries.

"If you learn from volunteering and helping people, and they're letting you learn off of them, I hope it indoctrinates a spirit of giving inside them to do this on their own," said Dr. Benjamin Massey, the Medical Director at Pueblo Surgery Center.

All volunteers say they hope more surgery centers in other communities start their own free surgery day as well.
