Free tax help still available

Congratulations are in store if you have filed your taxes. Today is "Tax Day" -- the deadline to get them done.

Tax preparers have been working all day to get last minute tax returns done.

The Pikes Peak Community Action Agency has hosted VITA -- or the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program for years. To qualify for the free service, you need to make less than $54,000 a year.

"You're helping people and just their gratitude is enough," says Dave Ross, a tax preparer. "Just the smile and relief when they come in."

He says one of the best things is how much money the program brings in for the community. VITA clients have received more than one million in refunds this year.

The agency says 13 percent of people in El Paso county(about 80,500) live under the federal poverty level.

VITA has completed more than 725 returns for this year at four sites in the county.

If you still need help with your tax returns, your best bet is to call 2-1-1 and the United Way can help you.
