Fugitives who fled halfway house back in custody

PUEBLO - Tips from News 5 viewers may have led to the capture of two fugitives we reported on earlier this month when they escaped from a Pueblo halfway house. Officers with the Pueblo Police Department arrested 21-year old Lenny Rodriguez at a home on the east side on October 7th. He was about to be terminated from Minnequa Community Corrections back on September 18th when he ran away from the facility.

Parole officers also picked up Anna Varela, 23, who left Minnequa for work on September 12th and never returned. Varela was serving an 8 year sentence for a drug conviction. Both Rodriguez and Varela are being held without bond at the Pueblo County Jail.

Three others who fled from Minnequa in September are still at large. Phil Martinez, 30 and Tonya Leonard, 30 were both serving time on drug charges when they walked off the property September 5th and 8th respectively. Michael Hernandez, 28, was sentenced to 18 months at Minnequa on a drug conviction when when walked away September 18th.

Detective Jeff Shay of Pueblo Crime Stoppers said he received nine tips in three days after our report aired October 7th. Those tips may be eligible for a cash reward if they lead to a felony arrest. Anonymous calls can be made to Pueblo Crime Stoppers at 542-STOP(7867).
