Future floods in Pueblo West may not be as bad

For many in Pueblo West, the sight of flooded streets was a first.

"I never thought that ditch would fill because it's always empty," said Thomas O'Connor, a resident.

A retention pond failed at Walker Ranch and filled drainage ditches and a dry creek bed yesterday.

Luckily no homes were damaged and now that the water's gone, a lot of muck and flattened plants show the path it took.

Some are concerned it could happen again if we get more rain.

"It wasn't that much rain I didn't think that happened," said O'Connor. "It was 15 or 20 minutes, and it filled up. If we got rain all day long, I'm concerned where it would go."

Those with Public Works in Pueblo West say it could flood again, but they do not expect as big of a wave to flow through now that the pond has failed and emptied.

They add the drainage ditches and pipes under the road should handle flooding from rain, but couldn't handle the flow from the pond.
