A 14-year-old Girl Scout is raising money to help Waldo Canyon Fire victims. KC Cruz is fundraising to buy 400 Blue Spruce Trees from the U.S. Forest Service to give to families who lost their home in the fire. She is calling her idea, "Trees of Hope."
Cruz said many of the victims are her friends, and she can relate to them because she almost lost her home in the Hayman fire when she was a young child. So Cruz wanted to find a way to give them hope and support, and thought new trees for their new yards would do just that.
She will also donate 10 trees to the Flying-W Ranch, which was also damaged by the fire. Cruz said she wants the first responders to be involved in distributing the trees as well.
Cruz said she has one goal: "(To) Give them hope that they're really not alone, a lot of people did end up losing their home and that they have people, we're like one big family basically," said Cruz.
The trees are $2 each and she has already started donating money and getting sponsors. If you'd like to donate or to get more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Cruz will distribute the trees on May 18-19 and May 25-26, from 10:00am to 3:00pm at the American Legion Post 5 Junior Auxillary.
