Group asks council to pull funding for animal shelter

CANON CITY- Animal lovers and former volunteers want the Canon City City Council to take their business away from the Fremont County Humane Society.

Speaking during the 2014 budget session, group members said the $30,000 the city spends with the shelter each year for animal control services should be directed to another facility.

The humane society failed three consecutive inspections by the Colorado Department of Agriculture, most recently for improper record keeping.

Earlier inspections found some animals were not removed from their crates during cleanings, untrained staff members euthanized animals and sick animals were not properly quarantined.

Shortly after the first inspection, ask of the shelter volunteers were dismissed.

The Fremont County Sheriffs Office has since opened an investigation into the facility for allegations of animal cruelly and theft of donations.
