This election, voters in Pueblo will decide whether to extend the city's half-cent sales tax. News First 5 is taking a closer look at Question No. 2C on the Pueblo ballot.
Here's how it works right now: When you make a purchase in Pueblo the city collects an extra half-cent tax on every dollar spent. The City of Pueblo can only use that money to attract outside companies to Pueblo, with the purpose of creating primary jobs.
A "yes" vote on Question No. 2C would extend the half-cent sales tax for an additional five years--which means it would expire on Dec. 31, 2016.
A "no" vote on Question No. 2C means the half-cent sales tax would expire on Dec. 31, 2011.
Most recently the City of Pueblo used $11.8 million in half-cent sales tax revenues to give to Vestas. The company opened its wind tower factory in Pueblo last year and employs 400 workers.
I'm planning to talk with a supporter and an opponent of Question No. 2C. I should have their interviews for you later today.
