Hate crime investigation in Pueblo

Pueblo police are investigating a possible hate crime. A Pueblo West High School teen says he was called a racial slur, then attacked at Dutch Clark Stadium last week. His family is sharing their story tonight in the hope that the attacker is caught, and no one else gets hurt.
Korbin Williams, 15, says he was leaving the Pueblo West versus South game last week when he was hit from behind. He says, "He called me a stupid N and punched me in the face, then he ran away."

The freshman says he never saw his attacker. He says, "I was dazed and then I hit the ground, and blacked out for a couple of seconds."   His mother, LaNecca says his face was swollen and his lip was caught in his braces. He also suffered a concussion. A week later, Korbin says he still has short term memory loss. LaNecca says, "I was devastated. I was crying, because Korbin's the kind of kid I just couldn't imagine someone saying something so hateful to him."

LaNecca Williams heads the Diversity Resource Center at CSU-Pueblo. She says this is the first time she's felt racism at home. She says, "I think it's been really hard for my family, because we've always raised our children to be the kind of people that respect others."

After the pain, came anger, but Korbin says that has faded. If he saw his attacker he says he would forgive him. LaNecca says, "My son isn't harboring any hate. He just wants that person to come forward and say that I messed up. I did the wrong thing, and I'm sorry."

They don't believe this problem rests with one person. They think finding a solution will take a village. "Hate is something we shouldn't tolerate in the community. So, I'm hoping people want to come and talk about it," says LaNecca. Their hope is that some good can come out of their pain.
They say they've been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the community. Some students at Pueblo West High School are also planning an anti-hate rally for next weekend.

They hope anyone with information about this case will call Pueblo police.
