HAZMAT situation at school sickens over two dozen students

JEFFERSON COUNTY - Five students were taken to the hospital and 24 were treated on the scene after they had reactions on the school playground on Monday afternoon at Jefferson County Open School.

The school is located at West 10th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood. Staff and students were evacuated to First Presbyterian Church in the 8200 block of West 10th Avenue in Lakewood.

St. Anthony's Hospital said three of the patients are in fair condition. Students were being sprayed down at a HAZMAT tent set up at the school.

West Metro and Lakewood Police are on the scene investigating.

According to the school district, "some of our students have experienced symptoms similar to an allergic reaction after recess on the playground."

The substance that caused the reaction is unknown at this time. Crews did detect a toxic chemical later in the afternoon but it did not register a second time during a subsequent sweep.
