Thirty one American special operations forces and 7 Afghan soldiers were killed in a helicopter early Saturday morning.
Accoding to the Associated Press, a senior member of the Obama administration says helicopter was shot down by insurgents.
The attack marks the highest number of American casualties recorded in a single incident in the decade long war.
In a statement issued by his office Afghan President Hamid Karzai sent his condolences to President Barack Obama.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. A NATO spokesperson says there was enemy activity in the area.
