Hiker hammers his way up and down the incline

He's the hiker with a hammer. Over the weekend, a man vacationing here from Wisconsin took it upon himself to make some improvements to the incline trail in Manitou Springs.

Eric Mathison says he had been looking forward to hiking the incline since hearing about it from his brother in 2008. During his first trip up two weeks ago, he couldn't help but notice all of the pieces of re-bar that were sticking up over the railroad ties.

Worried the rebar caused a safety hazard to hikers, Mathison went to Wal-Mart and bought an 8 pound sledge hammer. Then over the course of Saturday and Sunday, he set to work pounding down the spikes.

In all, he made eleven trips up and down the incline and nailed down 4,652 rebar spikes.

"I'm completely exhausted," Mathison said. "My hands are frozen this morning because my circulation is out a little bit; my legs hurt, my knees hurt, everything hurts, but it's such a great pleasurable experience."

Mathison says he wanted to prove that one person can make a difference. "Every spike I pounded is one less shoe lace that didn't get caught."

He's posted videos of his work on youtube.com. Click here to visit his page.
