Historic water agreement touted between Denver and Western Slope interests

TABERNASH, Colo. (AP) - Colorado water managers say they've reached a historic agreement on the contentious question of how to supply water to the Denver area while accommodating the needs of western Colorado.
The Colorado River Cooperative was unveiled Thursday in Tabernash. It calls for Denver Water to pay about $25 million to help mitigate the effects of diverting water from western Colorado and gives major water users in that part of the state a say in future Denver Water projects. It also calls for foes of Denver Water's plan to expand Gross Reservoir to withdraw their opposition. All the parties except Grand County have agreed to that.
The agreement still must be formally ratified by the Denver utility and 33 western Colorado irrigation districts, towns, ski resorts and other water users.
