Holmes Middle School nets three-peat in national award

Holmes Middle School in Colorado Springs School District 11 has been designated as a Trailblazer School to Watch for a third consecutive time.

The award was launched in 1999 as part of a recognition program developed by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. It is awarded once every 3 years and Holmes is one of only two schools in state to win three times.

Principal Rob Utter explains that award is very comprehensive and recognizes student growth as well as academic achievement.

"It's a big middle school award, it's only awarded to middle schools through out the entire country and what makes it feel like it might be an Academy Award is the fact that you get recognition in Washington D.C.," Utter said.

The award committee will meet with school leaders later this month to formally present them with their award. School representatives will also attend a gala celebration in Washington, D.C. on June 21.
