How dangerous is it to deal with people you meet online? We looked into the issue today in light of yesterday's standoff situation at a local urology center. Office workers say it all started as a dispute over an online ad for puppies.
We spoke with Kevin Johnson, a Digital Media Specialist for Pikes Peak Community College; he says people need to be aware of the information they're sharing online and take steps necessary to prevent unwanted contact.
Many sites have user controls that can prevent dangerous situations from arising. On Twitter and Facebook, you can block user accounts and privatize your page so only approved people can follow your activity, and sites like Craigslist let you anonymize your email address when posting. Johnson says being proactive about privacy is key to keeping safe.
