How to steer your career in a cool new direction

Anyone who has ever been to an ice arena has seen it, that big tractor shaped machine that is used to smooth over the ice. Well, if you've ever wondered what it would be like to drive the Zamboni, then here's your chance.

The Sertich Ice Arena is currently offering lessons on how to operate their Zamboni ice resurfacer through a program called the "Zen of Zam." The course consists of 12 weeks worth of 30 minute sessions. Instructor Will English says participants are put in the drivers seat from their very first lesson.

"They'll get a briefing on how the machine works, then they'll come up and take the seat and myself and other staff members will join them." English said. "We'll stand on the side or actually walk with them and guide them through."

The course costs $250 and a valid drivers license is required. Students will earn a certificate and have their photo taken upon completion. English says the course can open doors to a new career, just last month the ice arena hired on their first student to participate in the class.

"He was our initial Zen of Zam master, so to say, and he took the class wanted to see what it was all about," English recalled. "He did such a nice job it was a great opportunity for him to gain a job."

A companion program, the Zamboni Thrill Ride, is also available at a cost of $25. The single 30 minute lesson lets novices experience the thrill of driving the resurfacer. Click here for more information on the program or call the Sertich Ice Arena at 385-6051 to register.
