An annual giveaway started by a Denver priest lives on.
Hundreds of people, many of the homeless, lined up outside the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver to receive $20 Friday. The holiday season tradition was started by the late Monsignor Charles B. Woodrich.
KUSA-TV in Denver reports the church distributed $32,000 thanks to donations from Regis University, The Daniels Fund and an anonymous donor.
Woodrich, known as Father Woody, started giving out $10 bills almost two decades ago. The tradition continued after his death in 1991. The dollar amount was doubled in 1998.
