Hwy 24 roadwork underway

Rock slides closed Highway 24 west of Colorado Springs twice at the end of summer. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is tackling the problem with rock mitigation operations on Ute Pass this week. The work began Monday morning. It should take two weeks.

This week westbound Hwy 24 will be closed to traffic and eastbound U.S. 24 will be reduced to one lane in each direction for approximately four miles, between the Cave of the Winds Road intersection and the Pike Peak Toll Road intersection in Cascade.

"We have ten different sites above westbound Highway 24 that we need to scale and mitigate so that side of the road needs to be closed to maintain safe conditions for the traveling public and work crews," says CDOT Maintenance Foreman Gary Heller. "If people need to travel through the area during the day, please plan on a little extra travel time since we'll have a reduced speed limit in place as well."
