Ignacio man pleads guilty in stepfather's slaying

DURANGO, Colo. (AP) - An Ignacio man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the beating death of his stepfather.

The Durango Herald reports 32-year-old Richard Silva entered his plea Monday. He faces 20 to 28 years in prison and five years of parole at his Aug. 11 sentencing hearing.

Prosecutors say Silva beat 55-year-old Clayborn Scott with a 35-pound propane tank in May 2012. The two men shared a house about 4 miles north of Ignacio.

Silva originally pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

In January 2013 he was found incompetent to stand trial, but after Silva was treated, the judge ruled in July he was fit for the proceeding.
