Injured climber wasn't wearing helmet

COLORADO SPRINGS - A man who was rock climbing at the Garden of the Gods had to be taken to the hospital after falling about 8 feet and hitting his head. The accident happened shortly after 1:30 Friday afternoon.

The man and a climbing partner were ascending the western face of the Kissing Camels rock formation.

Lt. Marvin Adams of the Colorado Springs Fire Department High Angle Rescue Team says the men were most of the way up when the victim, who wasn't wearing a helmet, slipped and was briefly knocked unconscious when he hit his head on the rocks.

"He was hanging there for a while and his climbing partner lowered him down to the ground," Lt. Adams explained. "When we got there they were already on the ground, which then we just took full spinal precautions in case he had any head or neck or back injuries."

By the time he was put into the ambulance, the victim was awake and talking with paramedics. Both men had permits to climb.
