"Innocent bystander" dead after stabbing at Pueblo motel

One man is dead after a brutal stabbing at the Bramble Tree Inn near downtown Pueblo. According to police it all started when 57 year old David Carillo started beating a woman in his room at the motel. Police say the woman tried to take refuge in the room of 47 year old Merris McDowell. That's when everything went wrong.

John Ortega lives at the motel, knows the woman and says he saw it all happen. He tells us McDowell was just trying to be a Good Samaritan when he saw the woman was beat up. "He was an innocent bystander trying to help my ex-girlfriend out." he says.

Witnesses say when the woman went to McDowell's room, Carillo was furious. Ortega claims he heard Carillo mutter some sinister words. "He made a statement, I'm gonna kill somebody tonight." says Ortega.

Investigators say Carillo grabbed a knife, called McDowell out of his room and started a fight. "There was a scuffle between the two and he (McDowell) was stabbed four times in the chest." explains Sgt. Eric Bravo with the Pueblo Police Department. "He went over there like boom, boom, boom... Just stabbing him and stabbing him." explains Ortega.

McDowell later died in the hospital. Police immediately arrested Carillo and began building a case. They tell us investigators found the knife used in the murder and it was caught on tape. "There was also a surveillance video in the parking lot that corroborates the witness statements." explains Bravo. Carillo is currently being held on pending charges of 1st degree murder and 2nd degree assault. His bail has been set at $1,000,000.
