Man gets 35 year prison sentence for baby cousin's death

A Pueblo man has been sentenced to 35 years in prison in connection to the death of his baby cousin. Kevin Buehler made a tearful apology in court today before he was sentenced. "I'm sorry and I regret my actions," said Buehler. "I take full responsibility for the actions I made on that terrible day," he added.

Earlier in the hearing Selena Olson, Iyana's mother, called Buehler "An absolute monster." Olson, who's in jail on a separate matter, was allowed to speak at Buehler's sentencing hearing. "He (Buehler) showed no mercy on my beautiful daughter," said Olson. "You are an absolute monster and my only peace of mind is that Iyana is in a better place and you cannot hurt her," Olson told Buehler.

A year ago this week, the body of 9-month old Iyana Perez was found in a trash dumpster on the north side of Pueblo. An autopsy showed Perez died from brain trauma.

According to an arrest affidavit Buehler claimed Perez swallowed lotion and cologne and stopped breathing. Buehler told police he put her body inside trash bags and threw her in a dumpster--because he thought he'd be blamed.

In May, Buehler entered an Alford plea, which means he pleaded guilty while still maintaining his innocence. In exchange a first-degree murder charge was dropped.

Buehler's 35 years sentence includes three years for a parole violation.
