K-9 unit used in arrest for second degree burglary

Early Saturday morning, Colorado Springs police officers were dispatched to the Palo Verde Apartments, located at on N. Murray Blvd, in regards to a burglary in progress.

In the investigation, police found out that the victim was sitting inside the apartment when the suspect entered through the patio door. The victim confronted the suspect, who went to the bedroom closet. The victim then called the police, and exited the apartment.

Upon police arrival, several commands were given for the suspect, later identified as 20 year-old Matthew Kirt, to exit the apartment.  Kirt ignored the commands. The officers saw Kirt in the master closet, and noticed that he had barricaded himself inside by placing a ladder and other objects around him.

A K-9 unit was called to the scene.  Because Kirt would not come out, the officers released their canine into the closet.  The dog was able to drag Matthew Kirt out to the waiting officers. Kirt was treated on scene for minor injuries and was arrested for second degree burglary.
