Knowing the signs of heat related sickness

The summer heat can get to all of us. But it can especially be of concern for our kids - with so many enjoying outdoor sports camps this summer.

The heat and humidity can sneak up on kids - putting them in danger of heat exhaustion - even heat stroke. You may see them get really flushed or sweaty - or there's the other extreme where they turn really white and stop sweating. Hourly water breaks can be helpful, plus doctors say parents can prep kids before camp. That includes a healthy breakfast along with water or a sports drink.

Make sure you talk to kids about the warning signs of heat related illnesses - like feeling lightheaded or like they're going to pass out.
other danger signs include muscle cramping, headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.

Doctors say if you notice any of those symptoms in your young athlete you're going to want to seek medical attention immediately.
