COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force junior Kobi Rex was named the Mountain West Men's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon (Jan. 28). It is the first such award for the Colorado Springs native, who became the first high jumper ever on the men's side of the Air Force roster to earn the weekly conference award.
During the final day of last week's Air Force Invitational, Rex surpassed the seven-foot bar for the second time in three weeks, as he cleared a career-best matching 7'0½" to win his third consecutive high jump title. The only competitor to clear the seven-foot bar, Rex defeated 16 jumpers during the meet, including one high jumper that is ranked among the national top 10.
That mark, which is the third-best clearance in Academy history and an Air Force Junior Class Record, currently leads the conference and is ranked 18th in the NCAA (including ties, it is the ninth-best jump).
Rex was joined on the conference's list of award winners for Jan. 28 by San Diego State's Jasmine Burrell and Utah State's Chari Hawkins, who shared the MW Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
Air Force travels to Albuquerque, N.M., this Saturday (Feb. 1) for the New Mexico Team Invitational against Arizona State, LUS, Nebraska, Notre Dame, TCU, UCLA, Utah State and host New Mexico.
