LA County man died from West Nile virus

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County health officials say an elderly man who lived in the South Bay area has died after being infected with the West Nile virus.

Dr. Jonathan Fielding said Thursday that the man had pre-existing health conditions and was hospitalized at the time of his death.

To date, 13 West Nile virus infections have been documented in LA County, including six people who showed no symptoms but were found to have the illness after donating blood.

Last year, 174 cases were recorded and 6 people died.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram reported he victim was a 78-year-old Carson man who died Tuesday night. His family says he was hospitalized two weeks earlier with symptoms that included slurred speech, pain and memory loss.

The illness is spread by mosquito bites.
