La Junta hit by 'major' flash flooding

Law enforcement in La Junta say the city is experiencing major flash flooding Saturday evening.  A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for La Junta and the rest of the Lower Arkansas Valley until 11:30 p.m. Saturday.  There are reports that an inch of rain fell in approximately 15 minutes Saturday evening.  U.S. Highway 50 is closed in the La Junta area due to flooded underpasses, which are described as impassable.  La Junta police are urging no travel in the city or surrounding areas.  The National Weather Service says travel on Hwy. 50 is "strongly discouraged" from Fowler to Lamar.  Travel is also discouraged along State Highway 96 throughout the Lower Arkansas Valley as arroyos are expected to flood over the roadway.
