El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa just held a briefing to give out the latest information on the Black Forest Fire. Maketa says as of 5 p.m. the fire had burned an estimated 8.500 acres and 92 homes. However, he stressed those numbers are extremely likely to go higher because the fire continues to burn aggressively.
9,000 - 9,500 people have been affected by the fire, including 3,400 homes, 200 outbuildings and 150 commercial buildings.
Maketa's office recently released a list of homes that they knew were damaged or unaffected, but he said at the briefing that the list was changing as he spoke, because the fire had doubled back on areas that had been previously untouched. 487 fire fighting personnel are currently working to battle the the fire, and 112 law enforcement personnel are in the area assisting with evacuations, and road closures.
