Lawmakers may change unaffiliated candidates law

A Colorado lawmaker who recently switched from Democrat to unaffiliated is considering legislation to make it easier for unaffiliated candidates to get on the ballot.
Rep. Kathleen Curry says Colorado has the longest waiting period of any state for unaffiliated candidates.
In order to run as an unaffiliated under current law, the candidate has to have been registered as one by June the year before the election.
Curry doesn't expect to benefit personally from the change because she only wants to change the waiting period to a year before the election and she would still miss the deadline. She's planning to run as a write-in candidate.
A La Plata County commissioner who switched to unaffiliated is also challenging Colorado's law in court.
