Lessons from the Space Station

Sixth grade students at the Jack Swigert Aerospace Academy in Colorado Springs are spending the remainder of the school year studying the International Space Station.

Next week, the students will interview scientists and engineers familiar with the station as part of their project.  Two engineers from Boeing and two employees from Braxton Technology will speak with the students on Tuesday.

Teacher Leslie Wolken says that the space station is a constant theme throughout their classes.  For example in math, the space station is used to teach measurement and scale.

She says Tuesday's visit from Boeing and Braxton is about teaching interviewing skills.

Students will break into small groups to ask about the roles played by individual space agencies involved in the ISS project, and the challenges and benefits created by bringing together different cultures.
