Lightning insurance claims rise in the summer

Summer is peak season for lightning-related deaths and injuries, and lightning strikes cost nearly a billion dollars in insured losses last year, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

The number of claims has dropped over the years, which may be due to an increased use of lightning protection systems, but the dollar value of claims filed is skyrocketing thanks to the increasing numbers of home electronics.

If you know a storm is coming, unplug appliances well beforehand, never during the storm.
