Local high school receives breakfast grant

Pueblo Centennial High School has won an award from the Campaign to End Childhood Hunger for increasing participation in the school breakfast program.

To increase access to the School Breakfast Program, the Campaign partners created the Colorado School Breakfast Challenge which urged school principals to work with school nutrition staff to expand breakfast participation through innovative serving methods.

The principals and school nutrition directors with the highest increase in the percentage of breakfasts served (as a ratio of total enrollment) from October 2009 to October 2010 received cash prizes.

The October 2010 winners are:

  • Gold Prize - Centennial High School (Pueblo City School District 60): 81.91% increase
  • Silver Prize - Alsup Elementary (Adams 14): 78.59% increase
  • Bronze Prize - Beaver Valley Elementary School (Brush School District RE-2J): 77.81% increase
  • Honorable Mention - Underwood Elementary (Del Norte Schools C-7): 52.00% increase
  • Honorable Mention - Maplewood Elementary (Greeley 6): 48.06% increase
  • Honorable Mention - Cresson Elementary (Cripple Creek - Victor School District RE-1): 44.10% increase
  • Honorable Mention - Lake George Charter School (Park County RE-2): 41.89% increase
  • Honorable Mention - Emerald Elementary (Boulder Valley School District): 36.19% increase

Centennial High School received $5,000.
