Loveland First To Open For Second Straight Ski Season

GEORGETOWN, Colo. (AP) - Loveland is the first Colorado ski area to open this season. Resort spokesman John Sellers says one run opened at 9 a.m. on Sunday with an 18-inch base.

Sellers says the resort got 8 inches of natural snow in the past 48 hours to boost manufactured snow. He says a lot of people turned out for opening day, but he didn't have specifics.

It's the second straight year that Loveland was the first Colorado resort to open for the season. Arapahoe Basin plans to open on Monday.

Last year, when the fall was cooler, Loveland opened on Oct. 7.  Sunday River in Maine opened on Friday but wasn't planning to be open on weekdays yet. Oregon's Timberline Lodge has been open Fridays through Sundays since Oct. 1.
