Loveland taking steps to develop oil and gas regs

LOVELAND, Colo. (AP) - Loveland is taking steps to regulate oil and natural gas producers.
Councilors directed city staff to develop a "statement of direction" following news that Anadarko Petroleum Corp. had applied for drilling permits on the eastern edge of the city.
Nearby, Greeley and Longmont have adopted oil and gas industry regulations. A state lawsuit filed July 30 on behalf of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission challenges Longmont's regulations, citing eight instances where the ordinance is trumped by state law.
The Loveland Reporter-Herald reports that Loveland officials plan to examine those two city's ordinances to develop their own. Loveland's nine-month moratorium on oil and gas activity expires Feb. 13.
New technology allows energy companies to drill in new, more populous areas, prompting several cities to consider or enact regulations.
