Lyons flood victims getting surprise checks

LYONS, Colo. (AP) - Some residents and business owners in the Lyons area are getting a big surprise in their mailboxes: checks up to $5,000 to help them rebuild their lives after September's floods.

The Lyons Community Foundation and the Lyons Community Basic Needs and Emergency Fund mailed checks for more than $950,000 to 280 people Friday. They all submitted applications but most weren't notified in advance that they were receiving the money.

The recipients range from musicians who lost not only their home but their livelihood when their recording studio and equipment were swept away and a young girl who asked for money to buy a Polaroid camera after losing her camera and photos. The foundation's executive director, Emily Dusel (DO'-sell), says the girl wanted to be able to enjoy her photos immediately.
