Maddie Garrett is an award winning journalist who joined the News 5 team in January 2013, after being a reporter and fill-in anchor at KOAA's sister station in Lafayette, Louisiana, KATC. She brings with her several years of experience as a broadcast journalist and a passion for telling people's stories. For Maddie, being a journalist is more than simply bringing you the news, it's about seeking out the deeper meaning of a story and sorting through facts to bring you the truth. She believes in giving a voice to the voiceless and reporting on the issues that matter to the people of Southern Colorado. Whether it's natural disasters, politics, breaking news or how your tax dollars are being spent, Maddie always works to find the heart of every story.
She has won numerous awards over the years, including an Emmy for her work and coverage of the 2008 Presidential Election with the University of North Texas. She was also named runner up for Louisiana's Reporter of the Year by the Louisiana Associated Press Broadcasters Association, and won several LAPBA awards for her coverage of Louisiana's final Honor Air Flight to the national WWII memorial in Washington D.C.. Maddie is also currently nominated for Emmy awards for her part in the continuous coverage of the Mickey Shunick case, which gained national attention when a Louisiana college student was kidnapped in the summer of 2012. It was a story that not only touched the entire community of Lafayette, LA, but one that Maddie says she'll never forget.
Before moving to Louisiana, Maddie was a reporter and fill-in anchor for KXII-TV in Sherman, Texas. Born and raised in Dallas, Maddie attended and graduated CUM laude from the University of North Texas in 2009 with a BA in Electronic News Media.
Maddie really enjoys her new home here in Southern Colorado, especially trading in that southern heat for the mountains and cooler weather. She picked up skiing after moving to Colorado Springs, and also loves hiking and camping. She brings her favorite companion, her dog Boudreaux (pronounced "boo-dro"), everywhere she goes. He's a young Vizsla pup with a Cajun name but an adventurous Colorado attitude. When she's not out and about, Maddie enjoys reading a good book, one of her absolute favorites is J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" series. Maddie would love to hear from you, feel free to send her any news tips or just a hello to her email, firstname.lastname@example.org.
