Maes calls for school funding mandate time-out

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes is asking voters to approve a time-out on Colorado's public school funding mandate similar to the five-year time-out they approved for the state's tax- and spending-limitation amendment.

Maes told the Colorado Nonprofit Association on Thursday that nonprofit organizations could pick up the slack for cuts in government programs.

Democrat John Hickenlooper told the association the state is facing a $1.1 billion budget shortfall next year and the state needs to find a way for all children who want to go to college to get funding.

American Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo said he had a scheduling conflict and could not attend.
